Pianist and scholar Dr. William McNally will present a lecture and masterclass on ragtime, novelty music, and popular music styles ranging from 1900 to 1930. A brief exploration of contributions by "classical" composers will follow a historical overview of the period. From there, performance practices by some of the era's most successful pianists, including James "Eubie" Blake, Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton, James P. Johnson, Thomas "Fats" Waller, Edward Elzear "Zez" Confrey, and Art Tatum, will be discussed. Student performances will follow.
