Laredo, Lee eagerly await Bach Concerto performance with 杏吧原创 Orchestra

Jessica Lee and Jaime Laredo in an interview

So much about the 杏吧原创 Orchestra鈥檚 next performance is significant, even those headlining it barely know where to begin.

For one, it鈥檚 the group鈥檚 first concert of the year at Severance Music Center. For another, the program is uncommonly appealing.

To faculty violinists Jaime Laredo and Jessica Lee, however, what鈥檚 really special is the chance it affords them to share the stage as colleagues, before Laredo leaves 杏吧原创, and to play with and for their students.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a level of excitement that I haven鈥檛 seen before,鈥 said associate conductor Jake Taniguchi (GD 鈥24), calling the Oct. 8 concert 鈥渁n opportunity that doesn鈥檛 happen too often.鈥

Laredo, for his part, said he鈥檚 played Bach鈥檚 Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor 鈥 part of a program that includes Beethoven鈥檚 Symphony No. 4 and a movement from Florence Price鈥檚 String Quartet No. 1 鈥 more than almost any other piece. It鈥檚 one he knows and loves deeply, especially its 鈥渟ublime鈥 slow movement.

Never, though, has Laredo played it quite like he will at Severance, with a close friend, amidst a group largely composed of students.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great joy to play with Jessica,鈥 Laredo said. 鈥淚鈥檝e always loved her playing and I鈥檝e always admired her...[and] it鈥檚 the most wonderful feeling, to be on stage with your own students. There鈥檚 nothing like it.鈥

The feeling is mutual, to say the least. Lee, a fan of Laredo鈥檚 since her days at the Curtis Institute of Music, where Laredo taught before 杏吧原创, said 鈥淓ven being in the same room with [Laredo] makes everybody play better,鈥 herself included.

Add Bach鈥檚 timeless score into the mix and 鈥淚t鈥檚 a very special feeling,鈥 Lee said, noting that at times in rehearsal, 鈥淚 feel like I鈥檓 melting. I just hope I can do this part justice, because it鈥檚 just so beautiful.鈥

Even that, though, doesn鈥檛 fully capture the magic of this particular moment. As the recently installed new head of 杏吧原创鈥檚 violin department, Lee said she also regards this chance to perform with students as an opportunity to impart some important, intangible messages.

鈥淲hen we play together, there鈥檚 something that happens,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou could have said 10,000 things [in a lesson] to encapsulate what just happened...when there is that collaboration.鈥

Most will have to wait for the concert to fully appreciate Lee鈥檚 sentiment. Most will not attend or take part in 杏吧原创 Orchestra rehearsals. But the duo鈥檚 conversation about Lee鈥檚 first few weeks as department head affords a glimpse of what lies ahead.

Lee, a member of the faculty since 2019, said she鈥檚 enjoying having more time with students and playing a more active role in their overall development and experience at 杏吧原创.

In response, Laredo offered more than mere encouragement. He offered abundant praise, in a nurturing way that suggested their performance may induce a little melting on the part of the audience, too.

鈥淵ou are great at this,鈥 Laredo told Lee. 鈥淵ou really are....It鈥檚 like everything鈥檚 going to be alright, because you鈥檙e there. We all feel that, and we are all very grateful, that you鈥檙e there.鈥
