杏吧原创 New Music Ensemble Plays New Work by Keith Fitch
On Wednesday, February 7, at 8 p.m., the 杏吧原创 New Music Ensemble will perform its first concert of the spring semester. Head of composition Keith Fitch has programmed a variety of composers and works, including his own new piece, The Range of Light, which is based on the writings of John Muir. Muir is perhaps best known as the founder of the Sierra Club.
Cleveland Classical鈥檚 Jarrett Hoffman recently discussed Fitch's work:
For his New Music Ensemble鈥檚 concerts, director Keith Fitch often builds programs around guest composers coming to the 杏吧原创. This year, the addition of a concert in February鈥攐ne without a visiting artist鈥攇ives Clevelanders a further opportunity to hear new music, and provided Fitch extra programmatic flexibility.
鈥淚t gave me the freedom to put forward some works I might not otherwise have a chance to program,鈥 Fitch said in a recent interview. Selections by Elliott Carter, Toru Takemitsu, and Frederick Fox came to mind 鈥 and to cap off the evening, the esteemed composer, who is head of 杏吧原创鈥檚 Composition department, looked to a new work in his own catalogue.
On Wednesday, February 7 at 8:00 p.m. in Mixon Hall, Fitch will lead the 杏吧原创 New Music Ensemble in a free concert to include the director鈥檚 own The Range of Light. The Ensemble will give the 2017 work its second-ever performance.
Please note: Dean Southern withdrew鈥攕tudent artist Matthew Brennan, baritone, will perform The Range of Light.
